TRAVEL TIPS FOR WOMEN

Traveling with a mobile phone has its advantages, especially if delayed for airline connections.  If you have a mobile you
can call the airline reservation department directly while you wait for the one and only customer service agent in the
endless line of other passengers who are also trying to sort out missed connections.  It is also handy to have with you
to rearrange hotel/car reservations or to inform anyone picking you up at your destination.

Never completely trust information given out by airline or hotel staff (probably the same in most situations these days).
Sorry to say that you can ask five different employees the same question and get a different answer from each one, and
it is doubtful that anyone will actually be correct.  Do your own homework if and when possible if it's something that you
must have accurate info on.

If you find yourself stranded at a major hotel without your luggage, make sure to ask them for an emergency kit.  Most
major hotels have kits for women and men with different items to get you through the night.  Items that are usually
included are:  toothbrush, toothpaste, comb or brush, Q-tips, razor, shaving cream, contact lens solution (may be
available if you ask specifically), Tampax or sanitary pads (also available in the women's restroom of all major hotels).  If
there's other items that you require, don't be shy to ask the Housekeeping department staff to deliver them to your
room. Even if you plan on staying at a budget hotel, give their Front desk a call and ask them if they have any of the
toiletries that you may need to get you through the night.

If you intend on traveling on an airplane with a butane curling iron, make sure that you don't have an extra cartridge in
your luggage (carry-on or checked) as it will be confiscated.  Best thing to do is to make sure that the cartridge in the
curling iron is full before you leave home.

While traveling in the United States, airline security are requesting passengers to remove shoes and send them through
the x-ray machine while you walk either barefoot or in socks through the metal detector and collect your carry-on items
on the other side.  Don't know about you, but I'm not keen on walking in the fungus ridden footsteps of thousands of
other travelers. The assurance of a security officer that the floor was thoroughly cleaned in the middle of the night
wasn't too reassuring.

So, you have some options:

  • You can refuse to remove your shoes, which is completely within your rights, but you need to make sure you have
plenty of time for a thorough pat down and screening.  You don't have to remove your shoes for this event (and it
is an event), but you will be rigorously searched and screened before being allowed to go to your departure gate.

  • Take with you disposable blue booties (the kind that carpet cleaners wear), to put over your socks or bare feet so
you're not walking directly in the fungus.  Then place them in a ziplock/plastic bag after you retrieve your shoes

  • Have an extra pair of socks ready that you know you can remove after clearing security, so you're not putting
germ ridden socks back in your shoes.  Place them in a plastic bag after removing and keep them handy for the
return flight if you don't have the opportunity to wash them.
