Your Journey Starts Here!
We would rather be scouring the stalls and
shops of the Kasbah in Tunis, Tunisia.
Heading to the Medina (old city), the
Souks/Kasbah/markets offer amazing
shopping opportunities for all sorts of
interesting items.
Berber jewlery and silverware; pottery and
ceramics; handmade rugs and carpets;
handcarved olive wood bowls, lamps and
vases; engraved brass and copper trays,
coffeepots and vases; leather jackets, coats,
purses and pocketbooks; made-to-order
perfume and colognes; Bedouin scarves,
headbands and slippers; and one thing every
girl (or drag queen) should have... sequined
and gilded harem outfits.
In essence, something for everyone.
Be prepared to haggle and haggle well.
Whatever price you are told, offer 25% and
go from there. You should never pay more
than 50% of the original price that was
presented to you. You'll need some stamina
and be prepared to walk away.
Often, vendors will let you walk out the door
only to come find you in another store after a
few minutes. If they don't, you're really
offering too low a price, but it's a game that
you'll need to play to get the best deal.
Then there are the sounds of people being
called to Mosque and carrying on
conversations with their friends, smells and
aromas of food that is cooking and ready to
serve to the masses of people who work and
visit the Kasbah, then all the hustle and
bustle of locals going about their business.
This is not only a shoppers paradise, but
offers an inside view into the daily lives of
the people of Tunis.
