Well-orchestrated poker tournaments have officially arrived in the high desert of Central
Oregon. Rivals Sports Bar, Grill & Poker recently hosted a 4-event series running Sundays,
July 31st through August 21st.
The No Limit Hold 'Em Bounty Tourney held on July 31st saw 75 eager poker aficionados
ready and willing to kick off the tournament series. The beyond cute, Chris DuBois of
Bend, Oregon took down the tourney and smiled all the way to the bank.
On August 7th, an elite group of 45 players gathered for the Pot Limit Omaha 8
Tournament with the legendary Ed Gardner, hailing from Redmond, Oregon, making
another notch in his belt of poker wins.
August continued to sizzle with the Heads-Up NLHE Tournament on the 14th attracting a
field of 56 challengers at Rivals. The bracket board was hung on the wall and players
moved through the ranks until the oh-so-athletic Andy Vaughn of Bend claimed victory.
The Main Event No Limit Hold 'Em Championship started with a flurry of activity and a group
of 55 final-table wannabes at 1PM on Sunday August 21st. The count showed maybe 7 or
so women in the mix. WAVE Journey's very own Jill Hoelting was one of those poker gals
and had her sights set on a win. Twelve hours later, Jill experienced TLC: Talent & Luck
Combined for the win of the Main Event!
Going into heads-up action, Jill was facing Danny Mata known as one of the best players
in Central Oregon, if not THE Best. Danny had the lead in chip count as heads-up action
started with the time approaching 1AM in the morning. Just five or so hands were played
heads-up, and it all boiled down to two races. The big turn of events happened when Jill
went all-in with an AQ off-suit and was called by Danny and his pocket 3s. Holding her
breath, Jill watched as her Ace paired on the flop, giving her the winning hand and
doubling up to take a massive chip lead. Soon after, her all-in move with pocket 5s proved
to be powerful enough to seal the deal against Danny's call with his A7 of spades, and
claim the trophy.
Hats off to the expertise and attention to exacting detail by Angela Radich Jordison with
Troy Lent at her side and others in her posse for coordinating this month-long series in
such a professional manner. Appreciation shout-outs to Rivals' owners, Gary and Linda
Sobala, for welcoming poker players to their sports bar and grill. Rivals is definitely the
place to play poker in Central Oregon!
