2011 was a memorable travel year for us in so many ways. First off, we finally got to visit
locations that had been on our bucket lists for decades - how thrilling to finally experience
Greece! We explored new festivals, visited ancient monuments, made many new friends from
various corners of the globe, and don't even get us started with all the amazing food and
beverages we consumed as we journeyed. Enjoy our year in review with the below photos :)
To view some world class hot air ballooning, we didn't have to venture far from home. Bend, Oregon's
annual event, Balloons Over Bend, was met by perfect weather conditions and ample photo opportunities.
An absolute highlight during
our travels around Morocco
was a Berber Tea Ceremony
.
We visited this Berber woman
and her family at their home
outside of Marrakesh and
enjoyed the ritual of making
the Moroccan sweet mint tea.
The ancient pilgrimage across Spain known as de Camino de Santiago de Compostela was one of our
major outdoor adventures. We spent two weeks with friends, walking sections of the camino.
Who can resist the old Medina in Fes, Morocco? Certainly not us. Our guide toured us through the labyrinth
of alleys for hours (making sure we didn't get lost) and showed us the everyday life of the locals.
Got to appreciate friends that take one for the team so we could take a photo of camel riding.
More food on a local level, and it doesn't get much more authentic than the food stalls that fill
Djemma el Fna square in Marrakesh every night.
Who doesn't love France? Well, we certainly do and fell in love with the tiled roofs and quaintness of
Viviers.
Both of us had wanted to visit Greece for over 20
years. Finally, we got to realize that dream.
Santorini was picture-perfect and as stunning as
we'd imagined. It was especially fun arriving by
cruise ship, hiking the donkey trail to the top of
the caldera and finding this cafe with the most
fabulous views to enjoy Santorini wine and olives.
Fatima in Portugal was a very special monument to experience. Seeing the pilgrims from around the
world come to this shrine was indeed sobering.
Snowshoeing in Central Oregon's Cascade Mountains was extra special on this sunny day when we
experienced this field of ice crystals
.
Viv and Jill take a beach walk on Spain's Costa del Sol. Thanks for joining us as we travelled in 2011.
We look forward to sharing many more adventures with you in 2012.
