The World's Best Flea Markets

What is a Flea Market?  The literal translation of the French marche aux puces (an outdoor bazaar in
Paris, France), named after those annoying little parasites...that infested the upholstery of old furniture
put out for sale.  Today, the majority of us think of Flea Markets as a great place to find bargains on any
kind of merchandise we can imagine.

The following are Flea Markets that have been recommended by WAVE Journey readers.

1.  Camden Passage - London, England.  Angel Street tube, 7am to 2pm everyday.  Lots of Victorian
antiques.

2.  Le Marche aux Puces St-Ouen - Paris, France.  Metro: Porte de Clignancourt -
www.parispuces.com,  Saturday through Monday, 9:30am to 6pm.  A square-mile of alleyways, operating
for more than 100 years, the largest flea market in Europe, huge selection of stuff in every category.

3.  Die Nolle - Berlin, Germany.  Located in 16 old railway trains at Nollendorfplatz.  Wednesday
through Monday, 11am to 7pm.  Lots of collectibles, antique dolls, furniture books and loads of other items.

4.  Porta Portese Flea Market - Rome, Italy.  75 bus to Porta Portese, near end of Viale Trastevere.  
Sundays, 6:30am to 2pm.  Beware of pickpockets!!!  Lots of haggling going on here, prices tend to start off
at twice the price the seller expects to get.  

5.  Feira da Ladra - Lisbon, Portugal.  Campo de Santa Clara, Alfama.  Tuesday through Saturday,
7am to 6pm.  Great place to get antiques, rugs, clothes, pottery and more.

6.  Camden Lock - London, England.  Camden Town or Chalk Farm tube. Open everyday 10am to 6pm
except Christmas Day and New Years Day.   Website:  
www.camdenlockmarket.com.  This is London's
largest flea market  and has a variety of items for sale.  You can even get a reflexology or Shiatsu
treatment.

7.  Monastirake - Athens, Greece.  On Pandrosou Street (known as the Athens Flea Market).  Great
place to buy Greek souvenirs, art, WWII memorabilia and more.  

8.  Blackberry Fair Flea Market - Dublin, Ireland.  In the Rathmines area, on Rathmines Road and
Blackberry Lane.  Saturday & Sunday 11am to 6pm.  Antiques, electronics, furniture, bicycles and more.

9.  Albert Cuyp Market - Amsterdam, Netherlands.  Ferdinand Bolstraat 44, website:  
www.albertcuypmarkt.com.  Monday through Saturday 8am to 6pm.  Clogs, fish, clothes, gadgets and
more.

10.  El Rastro Flea Market - Madrid, Spain.  Metro: La Latina and Tirso de Molina.  Sundays & public
holidays, 10:30am to 3pm.   Antiques, fake designer goods, imports from Morocco and India.  Beware of
pickpockets!!!  

11.  The Rocks Flea Market - Sydney, Australia.  L6 Harrington Street.  Aboriginal work, gardening,
art, pottery, baked goods and more.

12.   Byward Market - Ottawa, Canada.  55 Byward Market Square.  Only closed on Christmas and New
Year's Day.  Seasons dictate much of the items for sale.  Everything from gardening items, to Christmas
trees, to arts and crafts and much more.

13.  Alemany Flea Market - San Francisco, USA.  100 Alemany Boulevard (under the concrete arche
of Hwy 280).  Open Sundays.  You name it, they have it.

14.  Annex Antiques Fair and Flea Market - New York, USA.  Sixth Avenue, between 25th Street and
26th Street.  Saturday & Sunday.  Website:  
www.annexantiques.com, the place to go for antiques,
furniture and more.

15.  Izmailovsky Souvenir Market - Moscow, Russia.  Izmailovsky Park Metro.  Hand painted
matryoshka dolls, art, chess sets, and more.
