Weltenburg Monastery

We would rather be downing the famous Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel beer whilst
taking in the splendid sights of the baroque Weltenburg monastery!

Boarding a small river boat in the Bavarian city of Kelheim (situated at the confluence of the
rivers Altmuhl and Danube), WJ cruised along the stunning Danube Gorge to reach the
Benedictine monastery at Weltenburg. This is an area where the river Danube has carved
through the hard limestone rock of the Swabian Alb to form the gorge.

Arriving at Weltenburg, Bavaria's oldest monastery, we enjoyed a tour and history lecture of
the beautiful baroque abbey (the world's oldest monastery brewery - since 1050) from a
very knowledgable local guide.

Soon it was time to taste the famous Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel, which received
the 2004 World Beer Award for best Dunkel beer (dark ale) in the world. To our surprise and
delight, this beer does not taste as dark or bitter as it appears. Instead, it is smooth, nutty
and goes down very easily - aaaaah. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

In nice weather the beer garden is open and provides a lovely spot to relax and enjoy your
drink. And if you arrive on a day when the kitchen is open, make sure to indulge in the local
specialties they prepare - such as: Weltenburg beef; roasted suckling pig; sour lung with
bread dumpling.
