We would rather be exploring the Palace of the Popes! We would rather be visiting Avignon's Palais des Papes - Palace of the Popes! Way back in 1309, the city of Avignon in France's Vauclause department, became home to the pope when his residency was moved away from the turbulence of Rome. The palace is one of the most important and famous Gothic palaces in Europe. The better part of a day can be spent visiting this UNESCO world heritgage site and the twenty-five rooms that are available to the public for viewing. The ancient remains of the Pont Saint-Benezet (also known as the Pont d' Avignon) sit partially across the Rhone river and can be viewed from various locations around Avignon. Both the palace and bridge can be visited daily throughout the year and entrance fees start at Euro 4 for the bridge and Euro 8 for the palace. http://www.palais-des-papes.com/anglais/index.html A reasonably priced choice for lodging in Avignon is Bagatelle International - only 7 minutes walk to the city centre and offering camping, hostel or hotel accommodations from Euro 17. A fantastic location and excellent facilities. http://campingbagatelle.com/5/Accueil.html Avignon is the perfect base for discovering the treasures of Provence. Avignon Office of Tourism: http://www.ot-avignon.fr/index-en.html Easily accessible by TGV from Paris and other cities in France. Happy Travels!
