Way back in 1309, the city of Avignon in France's Vauclause department, became home to the pope when his residency was moved away from the turbulence of Rome. The palace is one of the most important and famous Gothic palaces in Europe. The better part of a day can be spent visiting this UNESCO world heritgage site and the twenty-five rooms that are available to the public for viewing. The ancient remains of the Pont Saint-Benezet (also known as the Pont d' Avignon) sit partially across the Rhone river and can be viewed from various locations around Avignon.
