Things To Do In Frankfurt, Germany We would rather be eating frankfurters and drinking apple wine in Frankfurt, Germany! Located on the river Main (known in Germany as: Frankfurt am Main), Frankfurt is the financial center of Germany. Distinct differences between the Old Town and new Frankfurt are not only obvious from the changing skyline, but also from wandering the city streets and observing life of the locals. We found Old Town to be charming and a great place to wander and take in the wonderful architecture. The national drink that Frankfurt is famous for is Apfelwein or Ebbelwoi, known in English as apple wine. Make sure to do some sampling of this local speciality, but don't be expecting a sweet wine - we found it to be a bit on the sour side. When served hot, this German form of apple cider, is a good remedy for a cold or a tasty way to drink it in cold weather. The frankfurter (also known as Frankfurter Wustchen), is a pork sausage served with a bun and mustard on the side. Either open the bun, place the frankfurter inside and smother with mustard, or do what the locals do - dip your frankfurter in the mustard whilst eating the bun seperately and wash it all down with Apfelwein. It is said that the frankfurter is the origin of the American hotdog, but it is our opinion that the Frankfurter Wustchen is far superior. So, next time you're wandering the streets of Frankfurt, try out the local "fast food" and enjoy a glass of Apfelwein and a frankfurter. Guter appetit! Happy Travels!
