Things To Do In Cologne, Germany We would rather be drinking Kolsch beer at the Brauhaus Fruh in Cologne, Germany! http://www.frueh.de Although there are a number of breweries (around 27) making Kolsch, Fruh is our favorite. The Brauhaus Fruh has been brewing Kolsch for more than a hundred years and is WJ's recommended stop to sample this mighty-fine, top-fermented beer. You will find Fruh in the Old Town (Altstadt) not far from the Cologne Cathedral and main train station. Fruh's Kolsch is light in color and smooth to the taste buds, has plenty of hop aromas and is traditionally served in a simple 0.2 liter glass. Snacks, meals and beer are available daily from 8AM until midnight. The atmosphere at Fruh is that of a medieval cellar, with Kolsch being served straight from the cask. Address: Fruh Am Dom, Am Hof 12, Koln (Cologne) Located on the River Rhine, Cologne is one of Germany's oldest cities and the fourth largest after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. Not only is the city known for amazing architecture (don't miss the massive Cathedral/Dom dating back to the 12th century), some of the best museums (there's even a chocolate/schokoladen museum) and fantastic shopping, but it is the home of one of the world's best beers - Kolsch. So, in this great city you can learn all about history (more than 30 museums), devour chocolate, shop for Eau de Cologne, drink Kolsch and go to the Cathedral to confess your sins. What more could you want? Across Germany and other European countries, cities boast that they brew the best beer. Well WJ does our best to sample as many brews as possible during our travels, always looking for the best of the best. Well, isn't that what travel is all about anyway...being in touch with the locals and getting to know the real culture of a place you are visiting? Whatever you do, do NOT go to Dusseldorf and ask for a Kolsch - that is where they brew and you drink Altbier. Same in Cologne, do NOT ask for Altbier - that is where they brew and you drink Kolsch. Now don't get the two confused;-) Unfortunately, we were not able to come to a conclusion as to which beer is our favorite thus far. WJ has deemed that it is necessary for more sampling to occur to identify a winner. Cheers! Happy Travels! Viv and Jill AKA: WJ View photos at: www.wavejourneywomen.blogspot.com |
