A Weekend In Venice ~
article by Neha Kirpal

Venice is best enjoyed at leisure. Picture yourself in a café half submerged in water with a delicious
Pizza and Pano meal, sipping coffee. This is the true image of a contemporary Venetian. So go
ahead and lose yourself in a dream called Venice. The first thing to do while in Venice is to buy a
day pass for travel on any of the 20,000 ferries. This would equip you with transportation for the
whole day to hop from place to place. It works out much more reasonable than trying to buy a
ticket every time you board a ferry.

The Bridge of Sighs of Rio di Palazzo comes next with pretty gondolas strewn above the canal
below it. Adding to the already romantic experience, it is said that a kiss under the bridge is
supposed to bring eternal love. The Square is a crowded spectacle of lovely architectural buildings,
shops, and thousands of well fed almost pot-bellied pigeons fearlessly begging for bread crumbs.
As the various colors weave a sense of magical frenzy in the air, it is almost possible to imagine
Shakespeare sitting around somewhere amidst the crowd of painters, singers and other artisans.
No wonder, masked Casanovas are frequently spotted! The best way to explore this part is by
walking through its magnificent expanse. Walk and discover hidden treasures and mysteries that
make Venice truly what it is. For instance, enjoy the beautiful panel of Venetian masks elaborately
designed. It is done even in this day and age, signifying grandeur and craziness - the very
characteristic of the Venetian spirit!

A trip to Venice is perhaps not wholly complete without experiencing the opera - typical Venetian
masks in opera and ballet that are elegant, creative, and even zany, and are seen all through the
town. The famous Musica in Maschera is an art of melodrama as well as the mysterious and
enchanted world of Venetian masks. There are musicians and singers from the best Italian
orchestras, embellished in 18th century costumes and handcrafted masks. An unforgettable dream
made more haunting with marvelous paintings by Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Palma il Giovane, set against
the imposing grand Scoula Grande di S Giovanni Evangelista building. Given more time, travelers
may find a short excursion to Verona exciting as well since it houses the infamous Juliet's balcony.

Venezia awaits you!

Your journey starts here.
Spread over 118 tiny islands with vaporettos or water
buses as the only means of transport, it is perhaps
understandable why Venice is known as the city of
lovers, poets and romantics. A city built entirely on
water it provides and fosters the perfect ambience for
creative pursuits and peace of mind. As you get off at
the Venezia S Lucia station, the first thing that awaits
you is a breathtaking view of a seamless sea of water
everywhere you look. The magic of Venice begins from
the moment you board a ferry that takes you to the
hotel through the calm of the waters that surround
you. For an authentic and rich Venetian experience,
check into a hotel that preserves the historical
heritage of the city, characterized by thatched roofs
and gardens. The Lido Des Bains is one that provides
it.
Make your first stop San Marco or St. Mark's Basilica
Square. It is where the action is. The Palazzo Ducale
or Doge's Palace is an important museum for all
tourists, showcasing the artistic movements that
marked the 20th and the 21st century from Pop Art to
Minimalism, from Conceptual Art to Arte Pover. The
Prisons of Doge's Palace are the headquarters of the
prestigious 'Artistic Circle' of Venice where eminent
musicians have played. Every year, the Artistic Circle
exhibits artistic works of great public demand.
The Rialto Bridge that lies ahead is the most
famous bridge in Venice. It is constructed like
Alladin's cave with colorful porcelain carnival
masks, dazzling glassware, and haute couture.
Artists sit about sketching in this kaleidoscope of
artifacts, and atop a brightly-lit set of steps sit
little handcarts selling tourist trinkets like "I-was-
in-Venice" handbags. Sailing through the Grand
Canale is a magical experience. It provides a
view of all the opulent palazzos or palaces of
Venetian aristocracy. Another memorable boat
ride is along Guidecca Canal to Piazza San Marco.
Venice boasts of around 100 churches complete
with their mosaic ceilings and richly painted
murals – the kind only seen in books! It is
undoubtedly a visual treat viewing them and
stepping into them as you row around the city.
Another interesting visit is to the glass-blowing
factory at Murano. It is an experience to simply
walk into any of these stores selling transparent
glass wares in creative designs and colors – fragile
and expensive. Big shops like Vivarini even provide
glass-blowing demonstrations, apart from proudly
hosing a priceless collection of pure crystals,
colorful glasses like acquamarina, rosso rubino,
calcedonio and adventurine. Another great area to
walk around are the lagoon islands of Burano-
Torcello; but these require more time as they are
about an hour-long cruise away. Burano is known
mostly for its delicate lace and crochet, and
Torcello for its old churches, and cathedrals
embedded with mosaics.
