In the buzzing town of Bodrum, on the south west coast of Turkey, I had one of the best two
week breaks that I can remember. My friend Louise and I were actually staying in Gumbet – a
smaller town just around the corner from central Bodrum – where a vibrant beach and the
lively nightlife were only five minutes away. I had come across Hotel Kalender by chance in a
last minute rush to book accommodation for our August holiday. Finding positive reviews on
Trip Advisor, I booked it hurriedly and hoped for the best. In hindsight, how glad am I that I
happened to stumble across this fabulous hotel?
Arriving in Bodrum and unsure of what to expect, we pulled up to a beautifully quaint hotel
tucked away on a side road, just off the main street into town where colourful overhanging
plants decorated the stone entrance.

The first view was of a clean, rippling pool surrounded by sun loungers, situated adjacent to a
bar where several people sat in the shade sipping cool drinks and there were comfy sofas and
chairs spread on either side of the bar where people were reading and relaxing.

We were warmly greeted and taken through to the reception area where we chatted to the
staff, introduced ourselves and heard all about what the hotel offers – day trips, Turkish
Baths, boat trips, reduced prices on club entry, the list goes on – then were taken to our cosy
room by another friendly staff member.

As this small personal hotel was run by a Turkish family, it really held a traditional feeling,
whilst at the same time catering for everyone and anyone who stayed there. Meals were very
cheap at only 5 euros for a delicious three course Turkish meal; served on the homely terrace
above the pool – which made meal times feel almost like family dinner time! Hotel Kalender
alone, was an element of our fortnight abroad which made the trip such a wonderful
experience.

Exuding a laid back, totally chilled atmosphere, it somehow conjured this community feeling
between guests and staff as one and made us feel right at home from the first day. The
layout of the pool, bar and sitting area made mingling inevitable and within a day or two
Louise and I knew most of the people staying there, waving hello and goodbye to everyone
whenever we left or returned for the day.

The staff would venture out on nights out with us and show us the area and the clubbing
scene without the barrier of formalities. It was everything you could want from a hotel and
more. Due to the variety of events offered at discount by Hotel Kalender, our stay in Bodrum
was relaxing yet busy and varied.

Our boat trip was a fun filled day, motoring around islands and beaches, stopping to dive in
the sea and swim and our visit to the Turkish Baths was a thoroughly worthwhile day of
pampering; leaving us refreshed, rejuvenated and relaxed on leaving. We visited a fun filled
Aqua Park, beached it for several days and hit Halikarnus – the third biggest open air club in
the world - and Bar Street in Gumbet for some wild nights out. It was only due to Hotel
Kalender offering all these activities at such a reasonable price that they were made available
to us. It was a far cry from some of the girly beach holidays I have experienced in the past
because it held so many more cultural elements in addition to the partying holiday lifestyle us
Brits do so well. Hotel Kalender allowed us to have the best of both worlds, making the
holiday such a memorable one and we were so sad on our last day that we have vowed to
return in the near future for another fantastic stay! I strongly recommend you do the same.
