With the food being different enough, the language was quite an issue.  Not having studied
Spanish in school, I was not able to communicate with many people in Spain.  Sergio would
have to translate and after a while, it got annoying for him.  His parents, whom do not know
any English, were very hard to communicate with and on the times that I was left alone with
them, communicating through hand gestures and pointing was our way of talking.
Hanging out
with Sergio’s
friends was
even more
difficult. They
wanted so much
to talk and get
to know me, and
I the same. We
couldn’t have
real
conversations
about life and
gossip but
instead, just
short
conversations
about how I
liked Spain and
how long I was
staying.
Of course there were some of Sergio’s friends that had learned English through out school but
even then, with the accent and me speaking too fast, it was still hard to hold a conversation
with each other.

So many times I cursed myself for not taking a Spanish class in school or at least learning some
words before I came to Spain.  In America, when foreigners come to live or visit, we expect them
to know and speak our language, English.  So coming to Spain and not knowing or speaking
their language, Spanish, I felt hypocritical.

However, everyone was very patient with me and always willing to teach me Spanish along with
many people wanting me to teach them English.  After listening and asking questions I learned
words and different phrases and communicating became easier and easier.

I’ve experienced many different things in Spain that I would not have experienced anywhere
else.  I went to a Spanish house party, filmed a Spanish rap battle, and drove through the
country side for 5 hours with my Spanish boyfriend and his friend.

For me, Spain is an amazing country.  It offers so many different and exciting things that I had
not experienced before.  The mannerisms of people and places, the crowded necessary subway,
the history of the capital of Spain, the exotic food, and the beautiful language were all major
learning components of my trip.
