Who says you have to be a quilter to appreciate quilts?
Well, whoever it was, they were wrong! With 1200
quilts of all shapes, sizes, techniques, designs, themes,
colors and styles, the 33rd Annual Sisters Outdoor Quilt
Show in Sisters, Oregon, will awe and inspire quilters
and non-quilters alike.
The many quilts on display are works-of-art that will
amaze visitors by the detail and number of hours spent
in their creation. This world-class event features
submissions from quilters around the globe, where
visitors will find approximately one-third of the quilts on
display are for sale (so take your credit card).
The 2008 event held on Saturday July 12TH,
had a number of spectacular quilts from
near and far, but my personal favorites
were by a quilter all the way from Tokyo,
Japan (who had travelled with her seven
quilts), and African quilts from El Shaddai.
The El Shaddai quilts, shown at The
Sisters Coffee Company, are made by
survivors of the Rwandan genocide who
are in an orphanage for boys. The
orphanage teaches the boys how to
make quilts, therefore providing them
with a skill and a way to make money for
their future survival.
The City of Sisters, with a population of
1706, swells to more than 10,000 for this
popular event that is free to attendees and
held each year on the second week in July.
A very full day of events and activities at the
show and around the city keep visitors
pleasantly occupied from 9:30AM to 5:00PM,
with areas set up to teach kids how to quilt,
music performances, food booths, raffles to
enter, and show posters, mugs, t-shirts and
other memorabilia to purchase (this year’s
poster was designed by Paul Alan Bennett).
