Since that first play, over a
half million people have
visited the town. Survey the
locals now and you will find
that anyone old enough to
talk is probably involved in
the theatre or school in one
capacity or another.
Homeowners rent out rooms
to the theatre students,
theatre students work at the
theatre or restaurant if they
are not actually acting or
Rosebud Theatre Opera House
working backstage, and families that have come to Rosebud to study, to teach, or to work,
wind up staying and building a home with extra rooms to let.

production is Damien, by Aldyth Morris. It’s a well-acted biography of Joseph de Vesteur, born
in 1840, who entered the church when he turned 18 and eventually was sent as a missionary
to Honolulu. Upset by the pitiful plight of the lepers, who were shipped off to Molokai and then
ignored, he volunteered to be their spiritual leader and was soon living and working alongside
them. He eventually succumbed to leprosy himself, but not before making a better life for his
ailing parishioners.
Now in its 26th season, the theatre produces five ‘family friendly’ plays a year, from March to
