Graced with a legendary beauty the Ile d’Orléeans, 34 km (20 mi) long, by 8 km (5 mi) wide
and located in the heart of the St. Lawrence River, offers amazing views of the island’s
seductive appeal.  The first French settlers in the New World made this island their home and a
number of ancient buildings still stand from that era.
We stopped at the Cidrerie Verger Biodeau, a
tourist-oriented farm that offers group tours
tasting of ice cider and cider flavoured apple
butter, apple pie and picking apples in
season.  Driving about for a short distance we
came to Cassis Monna & Filles, one of the
largest blackcurrant producers, in Quebec.
They have created the famous Island
blackcurrant cream, in addition to aperitifs,
port, prototype wines and other delights.  As
we sipped on Cassis’s famous blackcurrant
liqueur, I turned to one of my colleagues
remarking, “Look at this countryside! Don’t
you feel its true the label this island carries:
‘Garden of Quebec’.”

After re-crossing the bridge, we stopped
awhile to admire the majestic Montmorency
Waterfalls, one of Quebec’s most spectacular
natural sites, and then took a cable car up to
lunch at Manior Montmorency, edging the fall.
Some 15 minute drive from the heart of
Quebec, the Falls are featured on a good
number of tours from-the city.

A spectacular and awe-inspiring natural
wonder, its water plummets 84 m (275 ft) on
its way to the St. Lawrence River - 30 m (98
ft) higher than Niagara Falls.  The views from
the cable car, the panoramic stairway and the
bridge over the Falls are breathtaking. In the
winter, the mountains on either side of the
falls become sheets of ice - an ice climber’s
mecca.  In the words of one of the waiters,
“You should come here in winter when the
Falls become a wonderland for ice climbing
enthusiasts.”

Back in our hotel we rested a while then joined in the celebrations on the streets of the
colourful era of New France.  It was a fantastic ending to our touring one of the most beautiful
parts of Canada and reliving a part of Quebec City’s historic past.
