Moorea: Must Be Heaven! ~ continued The island of Moorea, 15 miles away from Tahiti, is often called its sister island. Surrounded by a reef barrier, its lagoon is a masterpiece of beauty and color. The coast road around the island leads through a chaplet of districts, where modern life and traditions have found a compromise. Kilometer markers or “PK”, as locally called, inform you if you have gone too far or not yet arrived. There are 60 kms around the island. Article by Virginia De La Rosa

There was a strong smell, a
medley of alga, shells and fish
scents in the air. Souvenirs
from a remote time reminded
me about fishermen talks on
tides, swell, cycles of the
moon, currents. Sea is a living
creature with a life of its own,
punctuated by the cycles of the
moon. I understand, now.
Around 500 meters from the
beach, the lagoon was crossed
by a white scarf-like reef. Over
it, breaking waves seemed to
touch low cotton-white clouds.
Both, clouds and waves, were
synchronized in a “love me
tender” symphony.
Looking up, the sky was clear without a cloud. Only two sooty sterns, decorated this light blue
masterpiece. Out for fishing, they twirled and zigzagged around, merely touching the surface of
the lagoon.
To the left, in the open sea, Tahiti island. Like a beautiful “vahine” --woman, in Tahitian—lying
nonchalant on the beach, Tahiti greeted me with a lovely warm smile. I smiled back.
Overwhelmed by my emotions and exceeded by all this contemplation, I decided to take action.
Carefully, not to hurt myself, I earned my way through a maze of coral sprouts up to the sandy
bottom, where the lagoon takes its blue turquoise tone.
A frank dip. Water was warm and soft. I found myself
swimming among a multitude of tiny colored fish, not at
all shy. I was there, alife, enjoying the beauty of this
heavenly spot. I felt myself an island surrounded by
the reef and crowned by the sky.
The sudden noise of traffic brought me back to Earth. I
looked at the coast road and saw a long line of cars,
scooters and motos. People coming back from work,
certainly, going back home. It’s almost half past four...
I’ve spent the whole afternoon in this single spot. My mind has drifted away without limits. My
body has tasted the pleasures of nature and my soul was embued with emotions.
It’s hard to leave but it’s time to go! Reluctantly I say good-bye to this overwelming place.
Looking forward to come back again once more.
