Moorea: Must Be Heaven! ~ The island of Moorea, 15 miles away from Tahiti, is often called its sister island. Surrounded by a reef barrier, its lagoon is a masterpiece of beauty and color. The coast road around the island leads through a chaplet of districts, where modern life and traditions have found a compromise. Kilometer markers or “PK”, as locally called, inform you if you have gone too far or not yet arrived. There are 60 kms around the island. Article by Virginia De La Rosa

Women's Adventures, Vacations & Experiences ~ Your Journey Starts Here!

Sometimes there are places that have a special meaning for us. Places that attract us at a
certain stage of our life. Right here in Moorea, where I live, there’s a place where the sky, the
lagoon and the ocean converge in a unique point and the horizon opens wide, unlimited.
This place ran into me by chance. It was one of those days, when the whole world seems sad,
when no inspiration is possible, when the most wonderful happening looks dull and
meaningless. I had to stop. I was attracted by an unconscious strange force. My whole being
was caught. Almost in ecstasy, I heard myself say: “this must be heaven”. I was captivated by
its charm!
Coming from Haapiti, some 50 meters east of PK 16,
where the hazy shadow of Tahiti is visible, you’ll find
this heavenly spot.
There’s no doubt, it has been created for the joy of
ancient Tahitian gods, at the time when Heaven and
Earth were as one.
The beach is not wide, but there’s enough sand to
walk, sit or just lie down.
A support-wall built of stones, preventing island
erosion after the high-tide phemonenon of previous
years, helps to hide bathers from the sight of
passers-by.
On that day, dead leaves swept by the sea-breeze hopped over the wet sand. Hollow tree
trunks, driven by the current, and smooth coral limps were all over.
Wind flattened hibiscus and tall coconut trees promised fresh shadow for the noon-hours. And
seabirds nestling in nearby trees offered a sweet melody to this idyllic scene.
Under the spell, I decided to spread my pareo over the sun-warmed sand, sit down, take a
deep breath and let the beauty of this place overcome me. With closed eyes, I listened to
nature’s music. Rumbling of waves on the reef barrier, cries of birds looking for fish and, from
time to time, the mechanical motor sound of fishermen’s boat reminded me I was not alone on
Earth.
Opening my eyes I discovered
a ballet of blue shades, from
dark to light, to blue
turquoise. There’s no word to
describe the beauty and
colorful existence of the vast
lagoon extending straight
infront of my eyes.
All over water was purity and
transparency. Colored fish
swimming in this liquid mass,
were touched by silver
reflections coming from the
sun almost at its height. One
could guess where shallow
and deep water stood. It was
like an open-air aquarium with
bunch of tiny fish playing hide
and seek among coral heads.
