Thailand: Monster Fishing ~ Ao Nang, Krabi
By David Wilson
The best inland fishing in Thailand, by a mile, is at Gillham’s Fishing Park, near Ao Nang in
Krabi Province. Populated by extraordinarily large fish, this GBP 2,500,000, 26-acre park is
impeccably landscaped and atmospherically enhanced by the presence of gigantic karsts
(limestone crags) standing sentinel in the background.
Although it is expensive to fish here, it is eminently worth doing so, as among Gillham’s giant
shoal are 10 species of record-breaking super-heavy fish. That’s about 60 individual fish.
Andaman Adventures spoke to the park’s owner, Stuart Gillham, about the art of angling,
Andaman Adventures: And how do you source the fish?
Gillham: I’ve got an agent. He travels all round Thailand looking for big fish. Strange job
he has, negotiating the price of mammoth fish: there’s not exactly a huge market for them.
Andaman Adventures: What’s the most expensive fish you stock?
Gillham: The most expensive and hardest to find, believe it or not, is the Siamese carp,
which sells for around 1,000 Baht a kilo and is on the endangered species list now.
