BIO: Sharon retired from the City of San Jose, Ca in March, 2008 and is actively pursuing her
joy of travel, travel writing and photography. She lived on Guam for two years in the 1980’s
where she mastered scuba diving, advanced, night and rescue. She has traveled extensively in
Mexico, Jamaica, Hong Kong, China, Korea, the Philippines, England, France, Italy, Spain,
Morocco, Gibraltar, Egypt and Jordan and recently returned from New Zealand and Australia.
When she is not traveling the world, she is off on Motor Home adventures in the United States
with her husband of 36 years and their beloved rescue mutt, Muffy, or teaching water-skiing to
disadvantaged youth throughout the summer in San Jose.
When you find yourself in Auckland, New Zealand take the fifteen minute ferry ride across
the harbour to Devonport. This historic seaside village has a wide range of restaurants,
white sandy beaches, art galleries, shopping and helpful friendly locals. It’s quaint charm
and beautiful setting make you want to move right in. After touring the art galleries and
browsing the shops it was time for a late lunch.
Mecca Esplanade, a Mediterranean style
café came highly recommended. Located at
1 Victoria Road its charming store front is
outdone by the intimate cozy interior with
fireplace roaring and Vishal, gourmet chef
extraordinaire working his magic.
Entering through the bar area we were
amused to walk across a portion of glass
which revealed a wine cellar below.
While not for the budget conscious, the
offerings are first class. Ray ordered the
Seafood Platter a delicious selection of salt
and pepper squid, prawn wontons, pacific
oysters, house smoked salmon, garlic
mussels and snapper bites with warm
Turkish bread. We both marveled at the
freshness of this seafood- the squid was
tender, the oysters were better than melt
in your mouth, the mussels were delectable
and the snapper was done to perfection. All
these flavors played off one another and
this platter was so large we shared it and
took my order to go.

I ordered the char-grilled scotch fillet
(beef) with rocket, tomato and red onion
salad, basil pesto and balsamic
vinaigrette on warm Turkish pide (bread)
with fries on the side. The fillet was
flavorful and tender with all these
ingredients blending beautifully. When
asked to suggest a good bottle of local
New Zealand Wine, Robert recommended
a Stoneleigh Vineyard 2007 Pinot Noir
from the Marlborough region and I am
desperately seeking an outlet here in the
states. It was the perfect accompaniment
to an extraordinary first meal in Kiwi land.
Just writing about this meal makes my
mouth water all over again.
