I was sitting next to Chris Campbell, who described
himself as "an Irish Catholic kid from Queens" who
learned about Spanish wines working in bars and
restaurants in New York for 15 years. He said, "I
realized Spanish wine was coming on and that
importers were bringing in the safe stuff."
He became an importer, and his C&P Wines is
bringing in red Bobal from the Manchuela wine
region, which you may have never heard of. I met
him at a Manchuela wine-tasting at a restaurant in
New York, where on his left was Juan Antonio Ponce,
whose private winery Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce do
Manchuela makes 50,000 bottles of Bobal a year.
Chris said, "It is recognized by the restaurant world. They export to the U.S., mostly to
restaurants."
Manchuela is a wine region in the southeast of
Spain, in La Mancha, south of Madrid. It got its
"designation of origin" label in only 2000. Manchuela
includes over 70 municipalities in the provinces of
Albacete and Cuenca. The native red variety grape is
the pungent and fruity bobal. The main white variety
is macabeo. There is also tempranillo. Most of the
wine in the region is red.
At the lunch organized by Wines of Manchuela, we
got to taste the wines with food, which is the best
way. Here are the ones I liked the best:
Altos del Cabriel Macabeo 2009, $7 to $10, an
excellent clear fresh slightly steely taste, and even
better, Realice Riserva 2003, $18 to $20, from the
Bobal grape, a rich elegant smooth flavor that hits
you seconds after you drink it, which we had with
prawns, blood orange, couscous and hrissa cream
sauce.
Then Quantum 2008 from Vinícola El Molar, $10 to
$12, smooth, rich deep flavor, from the Merlot, Syrah
and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, with crusted tuna
in caramelized onion broth.
And for the main course, Señorío del Júcar Riserva
