Canmore: The Best Kept Secret in Canada's Rockies  ~
Article & photos by Ann Jordan-Mills
Look up.  Turn a 360°.  You are totally surrounded
by high mountains.

You know they are high because you’ve been told
that the tree line ends at about 7,500 ft., and
these majestic craggy peaks don’t have any trees
at the top.  Depending on the season, you might
see them unclothed, stark and defined against a
vivid blue sky in summer, or covered with the
sparkling and pristine snow of winter.
If you are there in the fall, look lower down
to the tree line, and you’ll see the vibrant
yellows and oranges of autumn leaves
dotted among the dark greens of the firs
and pines; or perhaps you’ll be there to
hear the rushing and roaring of streams
and rivers swollen with snow melt in the
spring.  Whenever you go, there’s a
different appearance, but there’s always
lots to see – and even more to do.
When you think of the Rocky Mountains in
Alberta, Canada, you usually think of Banff,
Lake Louise and Jasper National Parks.

But no more than ten minutes from Banff Park’s
gates (and 45 minutes west of Calgary) there’s
a small valley community called Canmore.   This
town, found in the shadow of world-famous
Banff, is often overlooked, and you don’t see as
many postcards of Main Street, Canmore, as you
do of Banff Avenue.   But those who discover
this sleepy little town consider it just as
beautiful - it’s definitely more peaceful - and it
provides access to all of the same opportunities
and activities you’ll find in the well known parks
of nearby Banff and Lake Louise.

Canmore is nestled in the Bow Valley
corridor on the banks of the Bow River,
surrounded by such peaks as the
Three Sisters, Ha Ling, Lady
Macdonald, and the Rundle Range –
each with its own history and legend –
and each with its own recreational
opportunities.
