Value & Bottom Line ~
To us, one of the most appealing aspects of river cruising is to unpack once and have our
luxury floating hotel transport us through the countryside with unobstructed views,
gourmet cuisine and our beverage of choice at our fingertips. The time spent in port (daily
tours are included in Uniworld's cruise prices) is extra special as the local tour guides each
bring with them a vast knowledge of the area, customs and culture.
Our River Royale cruise was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable modes of travel that
we have experienced. It permitted us to really unwind, while at the same time enhancing
our vacation with visits to historical sites oozing with culture. The small size of River
Royale allowed for ease of getting acquainted with fellow passengers and crew. Leaving
and returning to the ship while in port was hassle-free. There was no time wasted on
tender or coach transportation to the ports of call, as the ship docked within a short walk
of the main historical city centers or next to quaint medieval villages. Upon returning to
the ship there was always a smiling face greeting passengers -- with towels for cleansing
hands and a beverage to wet our whistle.
Attire aboard was country club casual. Even at dinner no formal wear was required,
although some passengers did choose to gussy up on one or two evenings. In fact, it
was very easy to travel with just carry-on luggage for our 8-day Uniworld river cruise.
The entertainment aboard River Royale was limited, primarily featuring a solo musician
who performed for a couple of hours each evening. The big shows full of exciting
performances that the ocean cruise ships feature were not missed by most -- on a river
cruise the mood is more romantic, relaxed, convivial and personally enriching.
River Royale has an elevator for guests that have difficulty with stairs (it does not reach
the sun deck), but the itinerary is one that does require a fair amount of walking for those
that wish to participate in the included tours. Passengers that wanted to do nothing but
sit, read, relax, enjoy the food and wine and take a quick, solo jaunt into ports found this
a great trip for themselves, as well. River cruises are vacations that we come away from
feeling refreshed, relaxed, enriched and rejuvenated - not exhausted.
Bottom line:
We found there to be tremendous value for the cost of this cruise, especially when taking
into consideration the overall high quality, superb service and all the "extras" that were
included in the cruise fare. When contemplating a Uniworld river cruise, remember to
factor in all of those "extras" that may be charged ala carte by other companies.
