Mireya's Oregon Coast Adventure
Hi! We just spent a month driving up the entire Oregon coast and you're in for a treat! It is absolutely spectacular!
We highly recommend the Oregon State Park campgrounds. They are right on Hwy 101, beautiful, spacious, wooded, sites with wonderful facilities and gorgeous locations, and incredibly inexpensive: between $16 & $22 for water, electric, picnic tables, fire rings, fire wood for sale, and very nice dump stations. The Hot showers are nice & clean and free.
None of the privately owned campgrounds are anywhere as beautiful and spacious as the state parks. We love them!
The best thing to do is to go online and check out their website, as some take reservations. http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/PARKS/index.shtml Some are right on the coast, with magnificent views and are very popular. Since you're going in Sept after the kids are back in school, things will slow down, but right now we found several that were totally full. One word of caution: if the sign at the entrance says "Campground Full", don't believe it. Go ahead anyway and ask, as they may have some openings.
Also, the most helpful thing we picked up at the Oregon Welcome Center was a booklet on the state parks that lists all the state parks, which ones have overnight camping, all the lighthouses, and park details with maps. We followed the maps all the way up the coast and it was very beneficial. If you have a cell phone, they even give phone numbers for the parks to call ahead. This booklet may be more helpful than the website. We really like it. Perhaps you can have one mailed to you in time before your departure.
Be sure to take some sweatshirts, windbreakers, and jackets, as the coast is very windy and can be quite chilly and foggy at times. The mornings and evenings are usually cool, with mornings being overcast and foggy and then clearing in the afternoons. Besides your camera, you might enjoy bringing binoculars. We spotted several whales off the coast (off season). You can also see seals in various places.
If you like fresh seafood, crab, clam chowder, lighthouses, and magnificent scenery, you're going to the right place!
Oh, and by the way, you may want to take more than a week if you can! There's so much to see and do and it's just so beautiful! Have a wonderful time and we hope you enjoy it as much as we have!
Safe travels and best wishes! MIREYA & RICK VANCE <><
