Greetings from WAVE Journey.com!

This shot is called, "We're under there somewhere!"
Viv and Jill recently had a fun time in Idaho, whitewater rafting the Salmon River. And, yes we dumped and were under the raft. Viv swallowed enough river water to stay hydrated for a week.
July started off with a bang for the July 1st Canada Day Celebration and the July 4TH Independence Day Celebration. After taking in the First Friday Gallery Walk in Bend, Oregon, WJ was off on a road trip to Boise, Idaho; Salmon, Idaho; Whitefish, Montana and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. We spent time horseback riding at Twin Peaks Ranch (more about this amazing week in the August newsletter) near Salmon, Idaho, golfing the North and South courses at Whitefish Lake Golf Club, swimming and boating at Whitefish Lake and exploring the town of Whitefish and enjoying too much good food along the way. Next we're heading off to Portland, Oregon for a Travel Writer's Conference.
Check back next month for more travel talk.

Tried and Tested by WJ
Keep those pesky mosquitos away without the use of nasty sprays! WJ had plenty of opportunities in the last few weeks to test some of the products from No Buzz Zone, and boy we were glad we did! Mosquito repellent in the form of a patch, a flameless candle and a diffuser - and each of the three products worked incredibly well. On an overnight campout in the high country of Idaho (plenty of mosquitos to be had there), we didn't get one bite with the help of the No Buzz Zone Patch. We used the flameless candles and diffuser on numerous occasions and we suffered no problems and no bites. These products work! We're delighted to find mosquito repellent in such an easy to use and clean form. Check out their website and enjoy a summer without mosquitos!

Travel Tales
The Swiss Underpants ~ Living My Dream in Switzerland by Ann Lombardi
After an exhausting tour through Europe, I couldn't wait to reach Switzerland, the perfect refuge for my travel-weary bones. My return flight home from Zurich was two weeks away, and visions of tranquil pastures, alpine lakes, and creamy chocolates danced in my head. How could I pass up the tempting "Ferien Auf Dem Bauernhof" (Farm Vacation) program advertised in the tourist office brochures? I was sure it would be a cross-cultural eye-opener for this city-slicker, housework-challenged American. So, I plopped down a finder's fee, scooped up the address of my host farm family, and hopped a train to the country for my taste of rural life.
Rolf and Ruth Sprunger welcomed me into their 400-year-old farm house, nestled high in the hills of a tiny village. And the old farm? It was the place of my dreams: contented dairy cows with huge hand-painted bells, and a menagerie of horses, pigs, hens, goats, and a half dozen dogs and cats. I loved the bountiful cherry and apple trees, organic veggie gardens, and the best homemade hazelnut carrot cake this side of the Atlantic.
The dark, worn wooden floors with secrets of centuries creaked musically throughout the house. A heavenly aroma of freshly baked wholegrain bread floated room-to-room from the wood-burning kitchen oven. I was in my element, and honestly didn't miss any of my usual creature comforts, like central heating or upstairs toilets. For those brisk nights, I already had mastered the art of starting the fire in my very own bedroom furnace and warming up the nifty mini-pillows filled with cherry pits, which kept my feet toasty under the fluffy goose down quilt. What an idyllic way of life, I thought, as I drifted off to sleep.

Care of the Land, Care of the Wildlife, Care of the People
The world's largest game relocation exercise at Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa
Madikwe Safari Lodge situated in the Madikwe Game Reserve, boasts the success of the world's largest game translocation exercise, Operation Phoenix. The project saw over 8000 animals of 28 species reintroduced to the reserve over a period of 6 years. Animals from different reserves across southern Africa, were brought in to rejuvenate the once thriving wildlife populations of the Marico Valley. Entire breeding herds of elephant totaling 220 individuals, were brought in from the then drought-stricken Ghona-re-zo area, ensuring the survival of these animals. Key populations of the endangered wild dog, white and black rhino were established and the protection of valuable species, such as the sable antelope and tsessebe was ensured. Research conducted on the behaviour of lions relocated to the reserve has provided important conservation insight for future relocation exercises.
Offering Stay for 3 Pay for 2 Nights, valid to the 30 of September, at this wonderful lodge, read more about this and other offers on SafariASAP.com
Book now and you too can see the results of this successful project and be a part of conservation history at Madikwe Safari Lodge.

For Good Eats in Whitefish, WJ suggests the following:
For great Mexican food in Whitefish enjoy dinner at Pescado Blanco. Touted for its gourmet Mexican cuisine with a rocky mountain flair, this was truly a delicious experience. In our opinion they serve the best tortilla chips and fresh guacamole. We also devoured the sizzling chicken fajitas and pulled beef verde enchiladas. Pescado Blanco - 235 1st Street, Whitefish, MT. Phone: 406-862- 3290 Open for dinner nightly at 5pm www.pescadoblanco.com
If hot wings are your thing then meandor down to Bulldog Saloon and hang out with the locals. WJ loved the basket of hot and honey garlic hot wings. The Bulldog also makes a mean burger and fries. Kids welcome (although, parents might want to view the bathrooms first to see if they need to censor). Expect a line up to order food at any time of day. Bulldog Saloon - 144 Central Avenue, Whitefish, MT. Phone: 406-862-5636 www.fart-slobber.com
A couple of blocks west of the main drag is a lively restaurant serving great pizza and pasta. Mambo Italiano has an open kitchen, serving wonderful food with fresh ingredients at reasonable prices. Friendly service was our experience in this very busy restaurant. The Italian Nachos are a must to share as an appetizer. Mambo Italiano - 234 2ND Street East, Whitefish, MT. Phone: 406-863-9600

Reader Recommended... Ecuador
I have just returned from two fabulous weeks - one week in the Galapagos (UNBELIEVABLE!) and one week in and around the Cloud Forest within two hours or so of Quito . Regarding the latter, I found that I had difficulty understanding and making sense of all the information I read about bird watching there. I am not a super birdwatcher and was arranging the trip as a surprise for my husband who is more of a bird watcher. I relied on information from bird watcher friends and the Internet. What I was not aware of was that flora and fauna vary depending on the elevations at which they are found (from about 4,000 feet to 10,000 feet!). I ended up making reservations at two different places and thus actually had experience of two opportunities. Found the second, the San Jorge Hosteria and Eco-Lodge, just on the edge of Quito to be a better experience. What made it both different and better for us is that 1) they own several properties (reserves) that include native forest at different elevations. The other thing is that the owner, Jorge Cruz, is an extraordinary naturalist whose knowledge of birds, ability to find them and point them out, makes it a truly extraordinary event. A friend who is a professional bird tour leader who was with us spent a full day with Jorge at the Milpe Reserve (7 waterfalls and they saw or heard 90 species!) and was really impressed with the whole experience. I would recommend that even if you chose this option you do make a stop at both Bellavista (which was not the other place we stayed, but one we stopped at for lunch) and Septimo Paraiso, for their greater range of hummingbird varieties. Both places will welcome you for a meal or a drink and the hummingbirds flock to the feeders-at literally arms length.
Additionally, San Jorge offers other tour options-ranging from horseback riding (perhaps not the best option) to day trips exploring medicinal herbs, or an introduction to shamanism, or a visit to Historic Quito, or a trip to hot springs on the side of a volcano. Tours to the Amazon side of the Andes can also be arranged. I am not sure if I would go through them for a Galapagos trip, I found that I got what I wanted by doing that work myself. But for much else, they should certainly be considered.

Wendy & Ron in Idaho suggest: "Try the Challis Golf Course for a great challenge and no wait. Clubhouse is open from 8-6 daily,(seasonally) 9 holes, lunch served 10-2, carts & clubs available, small pro shop, beautiful views of the lost river range. Don't bother calling for a tee time as this course has yet to be discovered. RV park overlooking the course with full hookups & new shower/laundry facility.
