Viv's Review:
One of the items I find the most useful for home, office and travel is a headlamp. No matter where I am, there's
always a headlamp at the ready and for the last decade I've had my old favorite that I keep coming back to.
That is until recently when I had the chance to test out the Icon Irix Headlamp (and haven't gone back to my old
standby since).
The best part of using a headlamp (for me) is the hands-free flexibility they allow. There are plenty of times
when a flashlight just doesn't work for the situation and most of the time in order to get enough light on the
subject, a headlamp is the only doable solution – especially for fixing things in awkward places, reading in the
dark and finding my way to the outhouse with only the stars as my guide.
This is a really great headlamp that is easy to use and the brightness is adjustable with the turn of a knob at
the top of the lamp. The LED provides clear, bright illumination that has a range from spotlight to floodlight.
Lightweight, with an adjustable headband, the Irix is comfortable enough to wear for a long periods of time.
The lamp itself swivels easily and gives a much wider range of use than other headlamps that have more
restricted movement. The lamp can easily be removed from the headband mount and held in hand like a
flashlight. I do think that for ease of mind in a situation where I might bang the lamp against something and it
would be a disaster if it fell out of its mount and I couldn't retrieve it, I am going to attach a elastic band around
it and the headband for added security.
Only using one AA battery is also a plus when travelling as there is less to carry as backup. So far I have used
the lamp for approximately 18 hours and it is still shining brightly on the original battery.
On a recent camping trip along the Oregon Coast, the Irix came in very handy for a multitude of tasks including:
late-night washing dishes; low-light beach hikes; use in the tent; and reading at night.
Bottom Line:
I really like the Icon Irix headlamp for use at home, around the office, camping, light adventures and when
travelling. For more rigorous activities, I just need to find a way to make sure the lamp doesn't accidentally fall
out of its mount. This is a headlamp that is built to last (not just plastic parts that break easily or deteriorate
with use) and I look forward to continuing to use it for many years to come.
