Golf in the Wild West
by Angella Hamilton

The cart path winds through a steep, rocky hillside as a coyote darts across the green.  The saguaro
cactus hides a jackrabbit that nearly escapes being the coyote’s dinner.  No, this isn’t a desert
sanctuary; it’s Rancho Manana – one of Arizona ’s ‘most scenic golf courses’.  North of Phoenix, in the
western town of Cave Creek lies a quiet resort filled with charm.  A dude ranch in 1945 has become a
star in itself with scenic golf, upscale southwestern dining and a newly renovated spa.

It’s easy to see why Golf for Women magazine recently named Rancho Manana one of the top courses
to play.  It’s one of the few courses in Arizona that has both desert and mountain views, but scenery
isn’t the only reason to play here. This course is interesting for all levels of golf.  Blue tee boxes
measure over 6,000 yards while red tees measure just over 4,000.  Director of Golf, Carolyn McMullen
says “The course really rewards accuracy.”   Ladies, bring a full set of clubs here, you will need them.
This course requires a good short game and good knowledge of how far you hit certain clubs.

Starting out, the course is pretty basic.  A few par 4’s to get you warmed up, but once you hit hole #5,
be prepared to have the camera out for a few holes.  Panoramic views of elevated landscape are
breathtaking. Stay focused for # 8 – riddled with bunkers on the approach to the green, this can turn
breathtaking views into choking for par if you don’t play smart. The back nine is quiet and peaceful with
a few residential holes, but put your game face on for hole # 11.  It’s short, sweet and right outside
the restaurant for diners to critique every move.

Now it’s your turn to do the critiquing as you finish up on 18 and head to Tonto Bar and Grill for a
margarita and shrimp flautas on the patio. Tonto is known for it’s creative, southwestern dishes. The
whole menu is outstanding so don’t be afraid to try something new.

If you just can’t seem to pull yourself away from the scenery, rent a poolside cabana located by the
spa.  Better yet, treat yourself to an after round massage or pedicure and relax in the meditation
room.  If you’re lucky, you will end the day watching the sun set into the desert sky and see for
yourself why Rancho Manana is a star of its own.

Rancho Manana is located at 5734 E. Rancho Manana Blvd. Cave Creek, AZ 85331
