Where Are We?

Viv and Jill are in beautiful and exciting South Africa.

Check out Viv's blog for regular updates on all the places WJ is visiting.   Click here for the
blog
and check back often for photos and tales from amazing locations throughout South Africa.

The first week in South Africa we did 10 game drives, a sunrise hot air balloon ride in
Pilanesberg National Park and Sun City saw us flying head first down a mountain at 140km/hr
for a thrilling ride on the world's longest zip line.  The most fantastic safari experience we had
was while staying at
CC Africa's Madikwe Safari Lodge in Madikwe Game Reserve.

More in depth details and photos will be featured in upcoming newsletters.

As South Africa is such a long flight from the west coast of North America, we decided to test
and review a few products that are supposed to keep us healthy and comfortable on the flight.

We will have a full report on those products and a variety of others in future newsletters, but
we'll start by naming a couple that we're most excited about:

Fox River Socks - we've each got 10 pairs and love them.

GSeat Lite - fantastic for plane, car and safari rides.  Would of had very sore bums without
them with all the sitting we've done over the last few weeks.  No sore tailbones, backache or
sciatica problems - love this product.

Freshette - a female urinary device to let you pee anywhere without exposing yourself to the
world.  No worries about dirty toilets, finding a bush or squatting for the world to see and
mossies to bite.

Travellers' Tips

Now is the time to plan that perfect vacation for 2007.  Make note
of the travellers' tips below:

Julie recommends 4-B restaurants:
There are several of them in Montana and New Mexico.  They have great food and
outstanding service.  Their homemade tomato soup is addictive!  Every time we're in
that area we have to look for a 4B so we can stop in for a bowl of soup.

You can also order their famous tomato soup online for home delivery.

Disabled Travelers Guide - www.disabledtravelersguide.com Nancy and Nate Berger
and their travels around the world.  Nancy is in a wheelchair.  They wrote a book and sell
it for US$26.  Offer a full refund if you're not satisfied for any reason. A must have for
any disabled person who wants to travel the world.

The 3rd Int’l. Women’s Peace Conference is July 10-15 in Dallas.  Open to all
around the world. Please look at the website and pass the word.

If you're heading to Stockholm, Sweden and want reasonably priced
accommodation, consider staying at
Castanea Hostel.  One of Stockholm's most
central hostels with prices starting from 24 Euro/night.  Only 150 meters from The
Royal Palace.  A perfect starting point for your Stockholm adventures…

Renada from Germany writes ~ While U.S.-based travel sites like Expedia, Orbitz,
and Travelocity might give you the lowest fares on domestic flights, they aren't
necessarily the best bargain sites for European flights.  In fact, they're not even in the top
five, according to a study conducted by Consumer WebWatch.

Instead, sites like Airstop (www.airstop.com), the German version of Expedia
(www.expedia.de), Opodo (www.opodo.de), and the Belgian version of Travelprice
(http://travelprice.cwtonline.be/fr/home.asp?cnt=air) had a much higher percentage of
lower fares to Europe when compared to their U.S. counterparts.

Paris Things To Do

Smoke Free At Last!
Some very good news for all non-smokers who live in France or love to visit this
magnificent country.  Starting February 1, smoking is forbidden in France in all public
places, offices, shops, metro trains and every place that is open to the public.  Only in
bars and restaurants will smoking be allowed for one more year, with smoking and non-
smoking sections still in effect.  In 2008 smoking will be  banned in all bars and
restaurants everywhere in France, just like in Ireland and Italy, who are successfully
following this new European trend.

Advice For The New Parent!  Helping You Reduce The Risk of SIDS

Best and Safest Place for Your Baby to Sleep...

Canadian Paediatric Society has issued these safety guidelines

  •  Sleeping with an infant or letting an infant sleep alone on any type of couch, recliner or
    cushioned chair is dangerous.

  •    Babies up to one year old should sleep on their backs in cribs meeting Canadian
    government safety standards.

  •    Their sleeping area must be free of quilts, comforters, bumper pads, pillows and pillow-
    like items.

  •    Having the crib in the parents bedroom is protective against SIDS.

  •    Infants should not be placed on waterbeds or air mattresses, even for temporary
    sleeping arrangements.

Crib, not beside mom, safest place for baby to sleep
By Lorrayne Anthony, CP

TORONTO (CP) Many new parents may think their bundle of joy is happiest snuggled between
mommy and daddy in the family bed, but Canadian pediatricians say the safest place for baby
is in a crib. Babies who sleep in adult beds are more vulnerable to the risks of unexpected death,
said Dr. Denis Leduc, one of the authors of recommendations published this week in the journal
Paediatrics & Child Health by the Canadian Paediatric Society.

The safest scenario is when the baby is placed in a crib in the parents’ bedroom.

If the crib is in the parents’ room there seems to be an increased safety factor. Preliminary
results from a study of cases of sudden infant death syndrome in Quebec between 1991 and
2000 showed that 81 of the 443 cases occurred in sleep environments that were identified as
unsafe.

Where is the safest place for my baby to sleep?
The safest place for your baby to sleep is in the room where you sleep. Place the baby’s crib or
bassinet near your bed (within an arm’s reach) to ease breastfeeding and to bond with your
baby.
