A month is not long enough to daily try a different tequila brand offered at Bend's very
own El Jimador located downtown on the corner of Wall and Franklin. With 33 different
brands of tequila on the shelf and a new and improved menu, El Jimador is worthy of a
visit. With Cinco de Mayo right around the corner, it is time to "get your Mexican on" and
check it out.
Just weeks ago, Baltazar Chavez took
over the apron strings at this downtown
benchmark, while still enjoying great
success at his SW Knoll Avenue
restaurant, Baltazar's. He reworked El
Jimador's menu with the same quality of
freshness and creativity that exudes at
his namesake establishment.
On a sun-drenched afternoon in mid-April, WAVE
Journey, along with a couple of friends, enjoyed El
Jimador's Happy Hour which runs Monday through
Friday 3:30 to 5:30PM and which quickly led into
us also sampling some of the new dinner entrees.
Seated with sun streaming through the window
and highlighting the large painting of a jimador ~
the farmer who cultivates and selects the Agave
plant used to make tequila, we took measure of
the recent refurbishments and made note of the
spruced-up interior.
We promptly started off with a House Margarita
($7) and a large basket of fresh and still warm
tri-color tortilla chips with salsa.
From the happy hour menu we enjoyed the Shrimp
Cocktail which consisted of 5 very large, sweet, delicious
and very fresh shrimp, cocktail sauce, lemon, lime,
avocado and cucumber. ($7)
Our next happy hour selection was the Stuffed
Mushrooms. Three extra large and tasty mushroom caps
served with a garnish of corn salsa. ($8)
Moving along to the dinner menu we savored the
Steak Taquitos, accompanied by pico de gallo, sour
cream and guacamole. ($12)
Up next was the Ahi Tuna entree - delicately seared and
perfectly prepared to medium rare, with an accompanying
chipotle mole sauce that packed a nice kick. The Ahi was
served over a bed of Mexican rice and along side corn
salsa. This was truly one of the best Ahi moments we've
enjoyed anywhere. ($16)
With little room to spare, we completed our dining
adventure with the Enchiladas Julia. The two chicken
breast-filled tortillas were served over rice and with
black beans. They were then topped with sour cream
as well as a garnish of chopped lettuce, tomatoes,
guacamole and shaved parmesan cheese. ($12)
With fresh and delicious menu offerings such as what
we enjoyed, El Jimador is bound to yet again become
Bend's Hot Spot for taking care of those cravings for
great Mexican fare. We'll be back... and soon!
P.S. Come summer, El Jimador plans to serve up all
our favorite Mexican breakfast dishes on Saturdays
and Sundays.
