Company Overview
British-based European Waterways was started in 1974 and has been under the ownership
of Derek Banks since 1977. The company has over 30 years of experience in the hotel barge
industry and has gone from one 22 ft. self-drive boat to operating a fleet of 18 boutique
hotel barges on the waterways of 9 European countries.
Their first boutique hotel barge was Anjodi. Anjodi is a Dutch barge purchased in Holland by
European Waterways in 1982, that then underwent a two-year conversion to transform her
from a grain-hauling barge into the premier luxury hotel barge on the Canal du Midi.
The barges that European Waterways operates within their fleet carry between 4 to 13
passengers, have an English-speaking crew of 3 to 6 and travel on the inland waterways of
France, England, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg.
European Waterways targets their cruises toward North American and British tourists who
have discerning tastes, a sense of adventure and interest in the culture of the area they are
travelling.
